Steve Trash used #janesgreenteam to tell HLN how he encourages people to go green with magic. Jane’s Green Team watched the eco-conscious magician on YouTube and we were hooked.
“I find things in the garbage and make up magic routines to go with them,” said Trash. “Garbage is a valuable natural resource, all that has happened is you’ve decided that it's not valuable anymore.”
Since 1984, Steve Trash has traveled around the country performing his magic act from sidewalks to stages. The eco-entertainer, illusionist and comedian has used the art of illusion to teach kids about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. He equates his routines to advertising for the environment.
“I talk to kids and I get them excited about reduce, reuse, recycle which are the magic words to make your garbage disappear, and they associate those feelings those sort of rocking feelings magic, music and fun with that message,” said Trash.
Trash believes with his “Trash and Recycle” Shows there can be a paradigm shift with children becoming the teachers.
“We have the trickle up economic effect. This is where you actually teach children the way to care for the planet sustainably, and your children then go and teach the parents the right thing,” said Trash.
Trash has a message to Americans out there who believe our garbage problem is just too big to tackle.
He says focus on your head and your heart when it comes to recycling.
“From the head you know that the planet is one place we are all sharing the same resources and all of these resources are interconnected,” said Trash. And the heart: “If you care the next generation and the generation after that; that’s the reason to do it.”
