Is the USDA protecting farm animals?

  • Farm Sanctuary: Government isn't enforcing Humane Slaughter Act
  • USDA: agency will ensure best practices are implemented

It seems like every week, there's another undercover investigation exposing horrific cruelty on America’s factory farms and in our slaughterhouses. We've shown you countless undercover videos from groups like the Humane Society and Mercy for Animals that uncover unimaginable cruelty.  Mercy for animals says that every single time they've done an undercover investigation, they've found this systematic cruelty.

Now, a major animal organization is charging the USDA simply is not doing its job.  Farm Sanctuary (, an organization that rescues animals from factory farms, has launched a campaign to get Americans to force the USDA to consider the animals’ welfare, specifically to enforce the Humane Slaughter Act.  The USDA's inspector general released a scathing report saying that its Food Safety Division wasn't enforcing the Humane Slaughter Act--and critics say a year later, nothing has changed.

Jane speaks to Farm Sanctuary's Bruce Friedrich about the USDA’s enforcement of the Humane Slaughter Act.
