Meg Gill was a classics major at Yale. Instead of going down what she calls the Yale path of “Wall Street, law school, med school,” Gill decided to go a different route -- into the beer business.
“My friends thought I was crazy,” she said.
But, Gill quickly made a name for herself as one of the youngest female brewery owners in the world. Now 29, Gill founded Golden Road Brewing with industry veteran Tony Yanow in 2011.
“L.A. didn't have a craft brewery that was packaging beer,” Yanow said. “That was really what got the ball rolling for us.”
Golden Road houses a brewery and a restaurant/pub. Some of its beers can be found in about 4,000 places around Los Angeles.
“If you had asked me six or seven years ago at Yale that beer could bring me into my own... I would have told you you were crazy,” Gill said. “It's a male-dominated industry, but it's been very welcoming for me.”
