Openings: 'Mouthy' kids murder trial begins

  • Julie Schenecker is charged with two counts of first-degree murder
  • If convicted, she faces life in prison
  • The trial is expected to last three weeks

Opening statements began Monday in the "shaky mom" murder trial, with jurors hearing gruesome details about how two children were shot to death by their own mother.

Julie Schenecker is accused of fatally shooting her 13-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter in January of 2011.

In opening statements, prosecutors claim Schenecker knew exactly what she was doing, telling jurors how this mom planned the massacre, bought a gun days before the killings and how she even wrote about her murderous plans to kill her "mouthy" kids. Schenecker's defense team, however, paints a different picture, telling jurors about a mentally ill woman who was not in charge of her actions.

Schenecker has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. If found guilty, she faces up to life in prison.
