Blind ambition: 10-year-old triathlete inspires others

  • 10-year-old Heaven Vallejos is legally blind, but isn't letting vision stand in her way
  • On Sunday, the fourth-grader is participating in 'Itsy Bitsy Triathlon'

A 100-yard swim, a three-mile bike ride and a three-quarter mile run would be quite an accomplishment for any 10-year-old.

What makes this story even more inspiring? Heaven Vallejos is legally blind. On Sunday, she isn't letting her vision stand in her way – she’s competing in San Diego's Itsy Bitsy Triathlon. Vallejos predicted she would probably "kick some butt!"

The fourth-grader can only see shadows. A volunteer will swim, bike and run beside her. Vallejos said she dreams of one day competing in the Paralympics.
