The same zoo that euthanized a healthy giraffe earlier in March has now killed four lions. On Monday, the Copenhagen Zoo put down a 16-year-old male, a 14-year-old female and 2 10-month-old cubs.
The zoo created an uproar in February when it killed 2-year-old giraffe Marius to avoid inbreeding. Marius' corpse was later fed to lions.
Zoo chief Steffen Straede said the space was needed for a new lion, who will "be the foundation of the zoo's next lion era." Zoo spokesperson Tobias Stenbaek Bro said an effort was made to place the lions elsewhere, but "unfortunately there wasn't any interest."
