Homeless hero: Owner's smile 'reward enough'

NEED TO KNOW
  • Joel Hartman made headlines when he returned a wallet he found dumpster-diving
  • Hartman was given a week's stay in a hotel and a makeover for his actions

The homeless man who took time to return a wallet he found while dumpster-diving in Atlanta, Georgia, said he believes in doing the right thing.

Joel Hartman found a woman's wallet a few weeks ago while looking for food. “I opened the wallet up and there’s the woman’s ID and credit card and all that stuff,” he told HLN's Mike Galanos Tuesday. Hartman said he didn’t even look to see if there was money in the billfold -- he wasn't concerned about that. “Just to see the smile on her face would be reward enough,” he said.

Since his story came to light, the Omni Hotel, where he returned the wallet, offered him a room and board for the week.
