Slain TSA officer's wife: 'I am truly devastated'

  • TSA officer Gerardo Hernandez was killed in Friday's shooting rampage at Los Angeles International Airport
  • His wife, Ana, described her late husband as a 'joyful person'

Just a day after Gerardo Hernandez was fatally shot by an armed man, Ana Hernandez tearfully described her slain husband as someone "who took pride in his duty for the American public and TSA mission."

Gerardo Hernandez was working as a travel document checker at Los Angeles International Airport when a gunman opened fire Friday. The FBI says the alleged shooter is 23-year-old Paul Anthony Ciancia.  Authorities say Ciancia entered Terminal 3, pulled a rifle from his bag and shot five people, including Hernandez.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, Hernandez would have celebrated his 40th birthday next week. His wife of 15 years confirmed Hernandez worked as a TSA officer at the airport since 2010. She says he was a joyful person who "always excited to go to work" and interact with passengers. Hernandez, an El Salvador native, was a father of two children.

A tweet from Los Angeles International Airport confirmed that airport police personnel will wear black mourning bands until the fallen officer is laid to rest.
