MacNeill defense name-drops Nancy Grace in trial

  • Defense attorney references Grace in opening statement
  • Utah doctor is accused of drugging and drowning his wife

The defense attorney for Martin MacNeill, the former doctor accused of murder, quickly found a way to work Nancy Grace's name into the proceedings Thursday.

Beginning her opening statement with a retelling of an Aesop fable, defense attorney Susanne Gustin pointed out that one of the three medical examiners to weigh in on the death of Michele was Dr. Samuel Perper, who had appeared as a guest on Grace's HLN show.

Prosecutors say MacNeill used a combination of prescription drugs and drowning to kill his wife. The defense says his wife died from natural causes.
