Prosecutors have dropped murder and child abuse charges against a St. Louis mother who had been accused of beating her toddler to death and dumping his body in a trash bin behind her apartment.
18-month-old Marquell Jackson had suffered three separate fatal injuries when his body was found. His mother, Melissa Jackson, was arrested in the case, but her charges were dropped last week.
Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce’s office did not explain why they dismissed the charges against Jackson, but she said in a statement to HLN that prosecutors “have the responsibility to drop charges if they believe they do not have sufficient evidence to prove a case beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Joyce said the investigation will continue and her office will “actively continue to pursue justice for Marquell Jackson.”
