Did bullies drive 12-year-old to suicide?

NEED TO KNOW
  • 12-year-old Rebecca Ann Sedwick jumped to her death
  • Her family says she had been bullied for more than a year

The sheriff of Lakeland, Florida, calls it "one of the saddest situations" he's ever seen.

After more than a year of persistent bullying in person and online, a 12-year-old girl killed herself by jumping off a cement plant Monday night.

The family of Rebecca Ann Sedwick says the girl was bullied and taunted online and at school for more than a year before she decided to take her life. Investigators say as many as 15 girls may have been involved in the bullying.

Before her death, she posted online, "I'm jumping and I can't take it anymore." She also searched Google for topics related to suicide and body image issues.

The sheriff says he's investigating to see if any charges apply, and stressed that parents should monitor their children's online activity.
