12 year old fighting rare infection is beating the odds

  • New photo shows brain-eating amoeba survivor smiling from her hospital bed
  • 12-year-old Kali Hardig is fighting a rare infection and beating the odds

Kali Hardig is only 12 years old, but she's already a survivor. After she was infected with a rare brain-eating parasite while swimming in July, she's now making an incredible recovery.

Through Facebook we are now seeing the first public photo of Kali since her infection. In the photo, Kali is shown sitting up in her hospital bed and smiling. An Arkansas Children's Hospital spokesman says she is also eating, drinking and talking. She can even walk with assistance during therapy sessions.

Doctors treated Kali with an experimental drug for the rare amoeba called Naegleria fowleri. Of  the 128 known cases of the infection in the U.S., only two patients have survived, according to the CDC. Kali now appears to be the third.
