Just a few years before shooting to fame on shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," actress Charisma Carpenter was nearly killed by a rogue former cop.

She was just 21 years old when she and her friends were attacked on a San Diego beach. Carpenter eventually helped get the man locked up, and she says she's got "a very healthy outlook" about the incident today. "Not only can you survive, you can thrive," she emphasized.

"Surviving Evil" presents stories of victims telling their personal stories of fighting back against their attackers. The series premieres Wednesday, August 28 at 10/9c on Investigation Discovery.
