Holy cuteness! Giant panda Mei Xiang gave birth to a new cub at Smithsonian's National Zoo Friday. Zoo officials say mom and baby appear to fine -- with the proud mom picking up and cradling her cub shortly after giving birth.
A zoo spokeswoman says the cub is alive and that zoo staff members heard it "vocalize" while watching on the live camera feeds.
Zoo officials say Mei Xiang delivered a second, stillborn twin Saturday. The twin had developmental defects.
The zoo will wait 100 days to name the cub, following Chinese tradition.
