A man who allegedly walked into an Atlanta-area elementary charter school and opened fire Tuesday afternoon has been taken into custody. No students or faculty were injured during the incident, according to a school spokesperson.
Students were evacuated to an area behind the McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Georgia, as the gunman entered the front, according to HLN affiliate WXIA. The school was closed down as police swept the area. The kids were taken to a nearby shopping center so their parents could pick them up.
The alleged gunman reportedly told staff at the school that he wanted to speak to one of the local TV stations, HLN affiliate WSB. An employee at that station reported on air that she heard shots fired while she was on the phone with the school. It is unclear if the shots were fired by the alleged gunman or responding officers.
Aerial pictures from the scene showed students huddled in groups in a field next to the school. The district brought in buses to take them to the shopping center.
