One week doesn’t seem like a long time, but that’s all it takes for students at Chicago Joe’s Rock ‘n Blues Camp to become rock stars.
Musicians “Chicago Joe” Jones and Micki Gonzalez started the band camp eight years ago to help transform musically talented kids into real performers.
They say putting the student bands together is more “art than science,” but teaching them how to get along and make music together is part of the magic.
“It’s a great experience," explains 16-year-old bass guitarist Dashiell Wakeman, "because out in the real world you're not going to be paired up with people with the exact same view as you.”
This was 14-year-old Malia Zacharias' first year at camp and her first opportunity to play in a band. Malia plays the piano and is also a vocalist. “I've got this amazing band. We kind of matched immediately. It was really fun,” she says.
During each week-long camp session, the bands learn to play a set of four songs and perform for a live audience by week’s end. You may just have to hear it to believe it!
