Witness: Trayvon Martin was on top when shot

  • DiMaio says angle of gunshot shows Trayvon was leaning over Zimmerman

A renowned pathologist took the stand as a defense expert Tuesday in the George Zimmerman trial. Dr. Vincent DiMaio, a former medical examiner in San Antonio, Texas, and an expert on gunshot wounds, said it appears that the fatal shot was fired by Zimmerman when he was underneath Trayvon Martin.

DiMaio said he arrived at that conclusion because the angle of the sweatshirt and undershirt that Martin was wearing appeared to be away from the body, which "is consistent with the fact" that Martin was leaning over Zimmerman when the shot was fired.

DiMaio testified that Martin could have been alive for up to 15 seconds after the shot to the heart. That contradicted an earlier prosecution contention that the shot was instantaneously fatal. The State's medical examiner testified earlier in the trial that Martin could have been alive for 10 seconds after the shot.
