Our food safety inspection system is broken

  • New report from USDA condemns govt. for failing to stop violations at slaughterhouses
  • Over 4 years, more than 44,000 violations reported at 616 slaughterhouses

An alarming report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture condemns the government itself for failing to stop repeat violations in pig slaughterhouses.  This jaw-dropping report essentially admits our food safety inspection system is broken.

Over 4 years, over 44-thousand violations were reported in 616 slaughterhouses. So what happened? Mostly, nothing. Only 28 times were any of those slaughterhouses suspended and then only briefly.

At one slaughterhouse, food safety inspectors handed out over 800 violations. 14 were called  egregious including: Quote, "fecal contamination on a hog after the final trim."  that same plant had almost 100 violations for quote, "exposed or possibly adulterated products that had 'grease smears' or 'black colored liquid substance' on processed meat."

Jane Velez-Mitchell sat down with Bruce Friedrich, of Farm Sanctuary. Farm sanctuary has rescued many pigs from factory farms.
