Animal Planet's "Mermaids: The Body Found" was a big hit for the creature network.
According to the LA Times, 3.6 million people tuned it for the "docufiction" special that purported to be about new evidence of the existence of mermaids. That's one of the largest audiences in the channel's history, bigger than even the Puppy Bowls or "Meerkat Manor."
Throughout history, sailors have reported seeing these mythical creatures during long voyages. Theories are that the seamen were seeing whales, dolphins, or manatees -- or just hallucinating after weeks at sea.
