Attorney: Trayvon texts 'completely irrelevant'

  • Defense releases series of text messages from Trayvon Martin
  • Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump says documents are an attempt to 'vilify the victim'

The George Zimmerman defense team has released documents and evidence that it has gathered in the case of the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Among the information are text messages that appear to show Martin as a rowdy teenager talking about fighting at school and smoking marijuana.

Benjamin Crump, the attorney for the parents of Martin, talked with Evening Express' Ryan Smith about the text messages, saying they are "completely irrelevant."

"This is a desperate attempt to try to influence the jury pool," Crump said. According to Crump, if the jury focuses on the events of Feb. 27, 2012, the evidence will never make it into the trial. "The only photographs that are relevant are the photographs of Trayvon Martin on the night he was shot and killed."

A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, where attorneys are expected to discuss whether jurors will see Trayvon's text messages. The defense is also expected to ask the judge for more time. Jury selection for the trial is scheduled to start on June 10.
