Same surgery, wildly different costs – Why?

NEED TO KNOW
  • New government study shows same procedures cost much less in some hospitals
  • How do hospitals decide what to charge?

How much does it cost to have a life-saving pacemaker operation, or treat a case of pneumonia?

The cost for those treatments can vary by tens of thousands of dollars, hospital to hospital, and one group wants to know why.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid put out the stats for the top 200 procedures, and the difference in some of the numbers is pretty shocking.

In New Jersey, for example, that pacemaker could cost you $101,000 or only $70,000 just down the road a way. That's according to the New York Times

Your pneumonia could cost as little as $14,000 in one hospital or as much as $38,000 in another, both in Dallas.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid says putting the info out is the first step to starting a real conversation about why.

You can compare for yourself at CMS.gov.
