Did e-mail contain clue into Travis' death?

  • Jodi Arias, on trial for the murder of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander, claims self-defense
  • Alexander was stabbed 29 times, shot, throat slashed

On Tuesday night, HLN’s Dr. Drew exclusively interviewed one of Travis Alexander’s best friends, Sky Hughes.

Hughes discussed the time that she and her husband invited Alexander up to their bedroom to talk about Jodi Arias’ behavior while Alexander and Arias were visiting the Hughes' residence. At the time, Arias was staying in a bedroom downstairs, where she was thought to have already been sleeping.

But while the three were talking, Hughes had a hunch that Arias was listening outside the door. Moments later, they heard a knock at their door.  It was Arias asking if everything was OK.

When Arias had left, Hughes had the same sense that Arias was outside the door once again. This time, Alexander jumped off the bed, jerked the door open and there stood Arias with a “look of anger” on her face.

As Dr. Drew’s conversation moved forward, Hughes revealed what she noticed in an e-mail that Alexander had written to Arias in late May of 2008.

“Jodi had [apparently] done something very, very bad -- very unforgivable,” Hughes said. “It had to be worse than slashing tires, stealing journals, stealing rings, stalking him – it was worse than that because this was the first time I saw this kind of response from [Travis].  I don't know what it was. It had to have been really bad.”

She added, “I do think that this led to her deciding that she was going to kill him because … this happened on [May] 26 and on the [May] 28, the gun was stolen and around that time she asks Daryl for gas cans -- she tells Ryan that she's going to be there the following week. All of that seems to have happened after this fight.”

In court, Arias claims that she killed her ex-boyfriend Alexander in self-defense on June 4, 2008 at his Mesa, Arizona home -- even though she had initially given authorities different stories about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Closing arguments will begin in her trial on Thursday, May 2, meaning the jury should get the case by the end of next week.

Arias faces the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder.
