Weekend Express with Lynn Smith

Fast-paced look at the day's essential news and buzz-worthy stories

Actress Lynn Whitfield talks "My Brother Marvin"

  • "My Brother Marvin" is a play based on R&B icon Marvin Gaye's life
  • The play is told from the perspective of Marvin's sister, Zeola Gaye

Motown legend Marvin Gaye is the soulful voice behind R&B hits like "Sexual Healing" and "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You." However, his life was cut short just one day before his 45th birthday-- when he was shot and killed by his own father.

Since his death in 1984, the events leading up to Gaye's murder have been discussed in books and featured in movies. Most recently, Marvin's sister, Zeola Gaye has teamed up with playwright Angela Dunlap for "My Brother Marvin." Told from Zeola's perspective, the play focuses on some of the untold stories from their parents' memoirs and letters.

Lynn Whitfield plays Alberta, Marvin Gaye's mother. She stopped by Weekend Express to tell us more about the project and what it's like to work closely with Zeola Gaye.
