This week in 1997, an anonymous tip led to the discovery of 39 bodies inside a San Diego, California, mansion. All were victims of a mass suicide. Authorities found 21 women and 18 men in Nike sneakers and matching dark clothing.

The dead members of a religious cult called Heaven’s Gate. They believed their suicides would allow them to leave their bodies and enter an alien spaceship, the arrival of which coincided with the appearance Hale-Bopp comet.
