Who will replace Pope Benedict XVI?

  • The pope will officially step down Thursday

Today marked the last time Pope Benedict XVI will deliver his Sunday blessing. He spoke to a large crowd at St. Peter's Square this morning, reiterating he's not abandoning the church. The religious leader says God has called on him to devote more time to prayer and meditation. He will officially step down Thursday.

Pope Benedict XVI announced earlier this month that he'll resign his post, saying that he's "no longer suited for the job" due to his advanced age. He is 85 years old.

In light of the Pope's resignation, who will take his place? After all, this is the first time a pope has stepped down in 600 years! To get a better idea of who may be stepping into the role, Natasha Curry spoke to Vatican expert John Allen.
