14-year-old shot at Georgia middle school

Authorities say a 14-year-old student was shot by another student Thursday outside Price Middle School in southeast Atlanta, Georgia.

Officials tell HLN the 14-year-old was shot in the back of the head, but he was alert and conscious at the school. He was taken to the hospital and was released late Thursday night.

The mother of the victim says her son told her that the other student started "talking smack" and pulled out a gun.

Atlanta police say a school resource officer disarmed the suspect before he was taken into custody. 

The public school, which serves grades six through eight, was briefly placed on lockdown. Parents were later able to pick up their children.
