Here at Making it in America, we're all about people who take a risk to work for a better life. People like Melany Boughman are an inspiration to other Americans who want more, and maybe just aren't sure how to take that first step.
Melany started a cupcake company called Cupcakes To Go Go. She says she was having a hard time balancing her corporate job and raising two kids, so instead of watching the life she wanted pass her by, Melany decided to make a change.
She began putting recipes together and then signed a lease for space near her home. Before she knew it, Melany had opened up a cupcake store!
Cupcakes To Go Go specializes in all kinds of cupcakes and even caters parties and events based on themes. Oh, and here's a cool tidbit, Melany's cupcake shop will come to you! Melany says it's such a fun way to reward employees, promote a business, thank customers or encourage students, and all you have to do is tell her crew what you want and they bring everything to you!
Melany has a degree in accounting, as well as an MBA, so she says owning a business was always in the back of her mind. She had no professional baking training, so that just came naturally to her! The store now has five employees and will celebrate its third anniversary next month. Plus, Melany was able to have a third child just last March!
When asked what her business means to her, Melany says:
"Any woman can relate to the challenges of balancing a career and family. There are needs at all hours of the day and finding time for both makes me happy and that I accomplished what I set out to do. Having the flexibility when my kids are young is important to me. And since I can set my schedule, I can do both. Sometimes I bake before my husband goes to work and sometimes I have a baby sitter and work during the day. I think I get the best of both worlds and I enjoy my work and kids so much more."
