Dr. Drew

Driven by current events, "Dr. Drew" on HLN focuses on the human - and human behavior - at the center of the story.

20-year-old woman is trapped in child’s body

  • Brooke Greenberg has stopped growing physically and mentally
  • Doctors say she has no obvious conditions that inhibit growth

Brooke Greenberg seemed to be a happy, thriving baby when she was born in 1993 -- but as she got older, it appeared as though something was wrong.

When she was four, she went into a coma. Her father thought she might die. But when she woke, Brooke continued to be challenged in ways that would affect her future, her family and herself as the result of this unexplained medical condition in which she has stopped growing physically and mentally.

Brooke is 20 years old today, but she looks like she’s 3 or 4. She cannot walk. She cannot speak. She is fed through a tube in her stomach and her brain is not much different than that of a 9-month-old baby. She cannot care for herself.

Medical experts are baffled by Brooke’s condition. She is the only person known to have what is called "Syndrome X".

Doctors say she has no obvious conditions that inhibit growth. She seems healthy in many ways... but researchers are studying Brooke’s genetic code to uncover secrets that may help unlock mysteries surrounding the aging process.

Brooke has a loving family, including a younger teenage sister. They accept her as she is. Though she requires special and constant care, Brooke’s devoted mom and dad strive to make her life normal.

Melanie Greenberg, Brooke's mother, told HLN's Dr. Drew Tuesday night, ”I think what it really did for us is made our family extremely tight… we just take each day as it is and we treat her just like… the other children to have a full life, to go to school, have lots of activities, get unconditional love and meet her demands.”
