Ryan Smith drives the inaugural parade route!

NEED TO KNOW
  • The parade will take place on Monday, January 21
  • Over 2,800 groups applied to participate in the parade this year

Ever wonder what Inauguration Day looks like from the president's perspective? Ryan Smith took a closer look at what Monday will look like from President Obama's shoes! He takes us on a little tour -- from the east front of the U.S. Capitol, down historic Constitution Avenue to the viewing stand -- guiding us through the parade from start to finish!

How did the parade get so big? Here are some fun facts about the event:

  • Marching bands and floats were added to the parade in the 1800s. For the 2013 parade, more than 2,800 groups applied to perform!
  • In 1977, Jimmy Carter was the only president to walk the entire parade route. Since then, every president has chosen to walk a portion of the route!
  • The Willard Hotel (on the route) is famous for secretly lodging Abraham Lincoln before his inauguration in 1861.
  • It's tradition for the president and his family to watch the parade from a viewing stand in front of the White House. In 1869, Ulysses S. Grant became the first president to do so.
