She makes discount shopping 'chic'

  • We're profiling a different American small business every day on Making it in America
  • Shauna Miller's blog Penny Chic inspired her clothing line that will soon be sold on

Something we love to do here at Making it in America is meet inspiring people. So we want you to meet Shauna Miller.

She started a movement she calls "Penny Chic." After college Shauna moved to New York City to work in the heart of the fashion industry, but like most recent grads, she couldn't afford the clothes. So she started a fashion blog. But here's the catch: She only featured clothes sold at Wal-Mart.

Now, two years later, is picking up Shauna's clothing line Penny Chic by Shauna Miller.

What's really cool about Shauna's story is that she did all this to help other girls like her who wanted to look the part, but couldn't pay for it. Shauna says anyone can look cute with an unlimited amount of money, but it takes some creativity to look chic on a budget. Shauna says she'll never forget any e-mail she gets from a reader who was inspired by her blog and what she does.

To keep up with Shauna and Penny Chic, check it out on Facebook, Twitter or the Penny Chic blog.
