6 ways to clear your clutter

Whether you live alone, it’s just the two of you or you have a big family, there’s one thing nearly all of us have in common.

Clutter!

Whether it’s the clothes that are spilling out of your closet or the toys you can’t stop tripping over in your child’s room, we’ve all got stuff we wish we could organize, file away or just get rid of.

That’s why Claire Kurtz founded the Well-Organized Woman to help people tackle that clutter and to develop the habits to keep it in check.

Here are some of her tips for organizing your home and keeping it free of clutter.

  1. Many of us just have too much stuff. Claire suggests two purges a year -- a time to go through toys, clothes and stuff to see what’s worth keeping, and what we would be better off hauling off to the dump, or donating to charity.
  2. Clothes are best sorted by season. You don’t need a parka in summer or shorts in winter. You can buy some inexpensive bins to store the clothes you won’t need, and keep them in an attic or closet until the next season.
  3. You can’t use a closet if you can’t see where things go. You can buy inexpensive lights that stick to the walls when a closet doesn’t have a fixture. That way you can make the best use of the space.
  4. Thin hangers that are all the same shape and size help you store more clothes… especially if space is tight.
  5. Shelf-dividers help organize items when you have deep shelves.
  6. Parents love to tell children to clean their rooms, but that doesn’t mean they understand what it means. It’s best for a parent to lay out their expectations, and to have a routine (books first, then clothes, then toys).
