It’s a brand new year, and it could hold a brand new you! Do you have some big changes you want to make? Finally ready to start that new diet? Morning Express is here to help -- and a Georgia woman tells her story to show you really can do it!
Kristy Olds weighed 372 pounds when she was rushed into the ICU after having a baby boy in August of 2008. She suffered from preeclampsia, which is severe high blood pressure. It was six days before she could even hold her son, Drew. A lot of things in her life were changing, but her weight wasn’t on the list just yet.
More than a year later, her friend asked her to walk in a 5K for preeclampsia. Without hesitation, Olds said, “yes.” Later, she thought to herself, I’m not sure I can walk a 5K! But, it was too late for second-guessing. She was already determined to do it.
Olds says she started walking every day. Her husband hit the sidewalks with her. Before she knew it, it was time for the 5K.
“My husband kept asking me, ‘Are you OK? Are you OK? Are you going to be able to do this?’ And I was determined to do it,” Olds said.
She finished the whole 5K, and that’s not all. When the walk was over, she kept up her routine of walking every day. Olds says she was already noticing the weight coming off. She decided to start experimenting, by cutting bad things out of her diet and seeing how much more she could lose. She started hopping on an exercise bike when she was watching TV, instead of lying on the couch. And keeping up with her little son started to get easier and easier.
Today, Olds weighs 181 pounds. That’s 191 pounds gone. She says she isn’t aiming to be super tiny -- she just wants to be healthy. She says she feels better, and she’s much more positive now. Olds says it may not have started out as weight-loss journey, but looking back, she knows that’s exactly what she needed.
Olds has developed her own program to help other people battling their weight. And if you think “Oh, I can’t afford to get in shape,” she’s looking at you. She did it without expensive gym memberships and pre-made meals.
