Plot to kill Justin Bieber -- foiled!

Justin Bieber was apparently the target of a murder plot!

A convicted killer named Dana Martin allegedly planned the whole thing from behind bars in New Mexico.

Martin is serving two life sentences for raping and killing a 15-year-old girl 12 years ago. HLN affiliate KRQE reports Martin and a fellow inmate named Mark Staake cooked up a plan to kill and castrate 4 people -- two in Vermont, followed by Bieber and his bodyguard. It was to happen after Staake got out of prison.

Staake recruited his nephew to help carry out the plan and the two actually did make it to Vermont, but Staake was arrested on outstanding warrants before they could follow through.

Why Bieber? That's not entirely clear, but Martin is apparently obsessed with the singer and even has a tattoo of Bieber's face on his leg.

A representative for Bieber says that they take every precaution to protect him and his fans.

The three men involved in the murder plot face charges of conspiracy to commit murder and aggravated battery.
