Holiday party diet tricks that work!

  • Atlanta school teacher Wubbie Hendrix tries to lose 60 pounds
  • The holiday food-fest could be her downfall
  • We'll check in on Wubbie over the next several months

We're heading into the holiday season, and that can spell disaster if you're trying to lose weight.

Mary Ward "Wubbie" Hendrix is an Atlanta-area middle school teacher on a mission to drop 60 pounds who is now facing the holiday challenge.

We're following her over the next several months as she negotiates the ups and downs of losing weight. Wubbie has a personal trainer, Mike Granatelli, to help her reach her goal. It's been about a month since we first checked in on her. Right off the bat -- it's weigh-in time in Mike's office. And it's good news: Wubbie lost eight pounds in a month.

Outside of her workouts at the gym, Wubbie says she's walking her two dogs. Mike says something as simple as walking her dogs in her hilly neighborhood is getting her heart rate into that high burn zone and it's really contributing to her weight loss. And Wubbie says she's eating healthier meals now, including "a lot of vegetables and protein."

'Tis the season to party and Wubbie is planning to attend some holiday festivities. She tells Mike that she worries that it could be her downfall to staying on track to lose weight. Mike's advice is to have a glass of water in her hand so that those finger foods and those little snacks and candies are a little less accessible. And, he says to converse with people at the party: "If you're talking, you're not eating."

Over the next month or so, Wubbie needs to "stay the course," according to Mike. He says she's done very well. "She's writing down all her foods and she's pre-packaging her snacks during the school day." He says, "If we stay on track, she'll lose those 60 pounds without a problem."

We'll check back with Wubbie after the first of the year to see if the holidays have been kind to her on her journey to peel off the pounds.  Stay tuned!
