More class time coming to 20,000 students

NEED TO KNOW
  • School districts in Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Tennessee are adding more class time
  • This mean longer days, longer school years or both

School is about to get longer for 20,000 students across the country. The hope is that it'll boost achievement and make us more globally competitive.

Several school districts in Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Tennessee all signed up to add 300 hours of class time in some of their public schools. That could mean longer days, a longer school year or both.

Sam Chaltain is a senior fellow at the Institute for a Democratic Education in America. He is also the author of American Schools. We ask him how longer days might help make a student more productive.
