New this weekend at the movies, two films that are not for the squeamish (or anyone under 17, unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian).
Mr. Moviefone, Russ Leatherman, says one has an Oscar-caliber performance, and the other "is what it is."
Brad Pitt and James Gandolfini (The Sopranos) star in "Killing Them Softly." Pitt plays a hit man sent to kill two thieves who decide to rob a mob card game. This is a violent film, "a Tarantino-esque, Guy Ritchie kind of violence," says Leatherman. Be prepared for a "visceral, down and dirty, grungy kind of movie experience" as he describes it. Despite the high body count, Leatherman says, "Gandolfini is great" in the film and could be a possible Oscar nominee.
From violent to gruesome... "The Collection" comes from the makers of the "Saw" movies. Leatherman says it's about "a young girl who is sort of trapped and kidnapped into this lair... and there is a lot of death and destruction." He says if you like that kind of movie, "you'll probably like ‘The Collection.’ ”
Of course, if mob movies or horror flicks aren't for you, Leatherman points out there are a LOT of other genres in the multiplex right now. For example:
Russ Leatherman appears every Friday on Morning Express with Robin Meade.
