A word of caution about buying a used car.

Here's what to look out for:

- Be wary of a used car that shows up as recently titled. Research the vehicle identification number at Carfax.com or a similar site.

- Use the National Insurance Crime Bureau's search tool at NICB.org to help identify flood cars.

- Get an independent mechanic to inspect a used car before you purchase it.
