Dr. Drew: What makes a cheater

General David Petraeus, 60, admitted to having an affair last week and resigned as head of the CIA. Petraeus and his wife have been married 38 years and have two grown children.

So many other powerful men have cheated on their wives: Bill Clinton, Herman Cain, John Edwards, Arnold Schwarzenegger … and the list goes on and on.

Talking more broadly about the topic Tuesday night, HLN’s Dr. Drew explained, “When things are horrible in childhood, we are magically attracted to those circumstances that re-create [the past]. We either are the perpetrator or the victim. We either go to one role or the other: The being cheated on or being cheated with. That is not a solution to these kinds of problems."

He added, “[Cheating] is a direct assault on kids and the whole family. The very family you spent years building is jeopardized.”
