Russ Leatherman, Mr. Moviefone, says the 50th anniversary Bond film "Skyfall" is so good that people didn't wait till the end of the film to applaud. He says that at his viewing, they were standing and clapping after the opening credit sequence!
Daniel Craig is back for a third turn as Agent 007 in the film, which also features Dame Judi Dench as "M" and Javier Bardem as Bond's latest nemesis, "Raoul Silva."
Leatherman says Skyfall is "ridiculously entertaining," and he wouldn't be surprised if it got an Oscar nomination "because it's such a good movie."
The Bond franchise spans 23 films (including "Skyfall") and has been nominated for Oscars nine times, winning twice. In 1964, "Goldfinger" won for best sound effects and the next year "Thunderball" won for best visual effects. The last time a 007 adventure was nominated was 31 years ago, when "For Your Eyes Only" was beat by "Arthur's Theme" for best song. No actor has ever been nominated for his or her performance in Bond film, and no film in the franchise has ever been considered for best picture.
Could that change this year?
"Skyfall"'s story revolves around Academy darling Dame Judy Dench's character and her history in the British Secret Service. "Her history comes back to haunt her," says Leatherman. Could she be Bond's first acting award nominee? Or will Adele's theme song be the key to Oscar for "Skyfall?"
Actually, there may be a problem there: According to the entertainment award prediction site GoldDerby.com, the "Skyfall" theme includes the iconic James Bond franchise music, which makes it not wholly original and potentially ineligible for Oscar gold. Take a listen... you'll hear what we mean at about 1:53:
No matter what the Academy thinks, Mr. Moviefone says he's "in" for "Skyfall."
The other big blockbuster hitting the multiplex this weekend is Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th President of the United States. Leatherman says it's, "a bit of a slog," but "definitely worth checking out."
Mr. Moviefone appears every Friday on Morning Express with Robin Meade.
