Surprised soldier goes from fatigues to fabulous

NEED TO KNOW
  • SSG Shameka McCloud thinks she's at HLN to be interviewed about her military career
  • Robin Meade flips the script and sends soldier on a top secret makeover mission

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Shameka McCloud of the 335th Signal Command in East Point, Georgia is a hard-working soldier, and devoted mom of a teenage daughter.  Given those qualifications we asked her to be a guest on Morning Express with Robin Meade to speak about her military experience... but here's the catch... there was no interview. This was a "Stories of Courage: The Give Back" makeover ambush!

We isolated SSG McCloud in a room and told her a producer would be coming up to walk her down to Studio H for her interview... but instead HLN's Robin Meade walked in with camera crew and surprised McCloud with a special day of pampering.

McCloud spent the day being chauffeured by limo to the Natural Body Spa for a massage, the ladies at Club Kiss Salon transformed her hair, celebrity make-up artist Roosevelt Cartwright gave her face a lift, and Adrene Ashford, owner of House of Adrene, completed the look with a sexy dress to make heads turn.

SSG McCloud loves being a soldier despite the challenges it brings.  She says serving two tours of duty in Iraq was hard, but it made her appreciate everything about being an American, and other than having to be away from her daughter, she would do it again.  In fact she'll be deploying again in the spring -- this time to Kuwait.

Watch HLN for more surprises for our troops leading up to Veterans Day -- it's all part of our "Stories of Courage: the Give Back."  Keep up with everything we're doing at HLNtv.com/Salute!
