Sandy survivor: 'We walked into the fire'

NEED TO KNOW
  • Ray Marten's family had to evacuate in the middle of Superstorm Sandy when their house caught on fire

The Marten family planned to ride out the storm in their home in Rockaway Beach, New York. They expected the flooding but they did not expect to have to evacuate in the middle of the storm because their house caught on fire.

“We actually walked into the fire more or less,” Ray Marten told HLN’s Kyra Phillips. "We’re being showered with an amazing amount of embers, thousands of embers flying horizontally at us.”

Check out the video above to hear how the family was able to escape unharmed.
