Michelle O: 'Barack knows the American Dream'

NEED TO KNOW
  • First Lady delivers rousing, emotional speech at the Democratic National Convention

To say First Lady Michelle Obama's speech wowed the crowd at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday night would be an understatement. They loved her. A lot. And judging by the standing ovation and roaring cheers, you might think it was the president himself.

"In the end, for Barack, these issues aren't political -- they're personal," she said to loud cheers from the crowd. "Barack knows the American Dream because he's lived it, and he wants everyone, everyone in this country to have the same opportunity, no matter who we are, or where we're from, or what we look like, or who we love."

She described a different side of her husband, saying he's the man who "sits down with me and our girls for dinner nearly every night, patiently answering their questions about issues in the news, and strategizing about middle school friendships."

The first lady is perhaps her husband's best salesperson. She is wildly popular (polls show she has around a 70% approval rating) and can describe her husband -- who's in the fight for his political life -- that relates to average Americans looking for hope in this economic downturn.

Towards the end of the speech, Mrs. Obama choked up and tears formed in her eyes as she talked about her daughters -- and the future they will face. She said her first role will always be "Mom-in-Chief."
