Some middle school students could be in big trouble with their principal for bullying an older woman.
Karen Klein, 68, is a school bus monitor in Greece, New York. On Monday, she sat quietly as students on the bus cursed at her, made suggestive comments and made fun of her weight. One kid even blamed her for her son’s suicide 10 years ago. Klein says she tried to ignore the abuse, but the comment about her son was really hard on her.
It looks like a student took the video with a cell phone, which was then posted on Facebook and YouTube. In one day, the video was watched more than a million times.
The school district says it has discovered similar videos and it’s trying to identify the students in them. The principal of Greece Athena Middle School says the students involved will face “strong disciplinary action.” Klein says the kids were “just plain mean.”
There’s a huge outpouring of support for Klein. People have sent messages and flowers. She’s been invited to appear on several television news shows. And an online fundraiser gathered nearly $150,000 for her in its first day. The organizer suggests she use the money for a much-needed vacation. Klein, who has eight grandchildren, says she’s stunned by the reaction and more surprised about a gift from Southwest Airlines.
