One-armed surfer travels with no sweat

  • A shark attack almost 10 ten years ago left Bethany Hamilton with only one arm
  • At 22, Bethany is one of the world’s top professional surfers
  • Her story was made into the movie 'Soul Surfer' in 2011

As a professional surfer, Bethany Hamilton is on the road more than 150 days out of the year.

“It’s a pretty exciting lifestyle. I get to travel all around the world," she says. “I’ve seen a lot of cool places along the way and it’s been awesome.”

When Bethany is prepping for a trip, she admits she’s a bad packer: “I take forever. My stuff’s all messy and unorganized. I guess it’s just how I do it!” She thinks the airlines cringe when they see her coming with her overstuffed suitcase and big surfboard bag. “Almost every time, I travel overweight," she confesses. “I make sure I’m extra prepared.”

A couple of things she doesn’t leave home without include her bible, a pillow, some healthy snacks, her iPod, and a sarong. Bethany loves the sarong because it’s so versatile. “You have your blanket. If you spill something on your pants, you can use this as a skirt. You can stretch on it. I just love it.”

One of the toughest challenges for the surfer when she travels is eating healthy. She relies on the website to help find vegetarian, vegan and healthy food choices throughout the world.

When Bethany’s not surfing she loves to go snowboarding in California.  “I don’t get to do it too often but every now and then," she says with a sigh.

Not much scares this shark attack survivor, but when she’s on the road she’s afraid of missing her flight home. “I don’t mind missing other flights, but if it’s my flight home after a long trip, I make sure I get on that flight or if it’s like delayed I get a little bit frazzled,” she explains. That’s because she’s ready to get “back to Hawaii, beautiful Hawaii.”
