Using horses to heal military heroes

NEED TO KNOW
  • Spirit Therapies' specially trained animals soothe and calm damaged minds and bodies
  • Nominate a Breakthrough Woman who is making a difference in your community

Breakthrough Woman Laurie Willmott is making an impact with veterans and people suffering from mental and physical disabilities. Her non-profit organization, Spirit Therapies, uses specially trained therapy horses to help calm stresses and ease pains.

Willmott's father and brother were both veterans, and in their honor she decided to add a program geared toward military members suffering from the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Participants say exercising the horses helps to center and relax bodies and minds.

"The horses don't judge them," says Willmott, "These guys just need somebody to love them, to give them some kind of little, teeny hope."

She could be featured on HLN as our next Breakthrough Woman.
