Staff Sergeant Robert Bales is accused of shooting and killing 16 Afghan civilians. His attorney, John Henry Browne, says Bales suffers from untreated Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Bales, 38, was on his fourth tour of duty. He’d sustained a brain injury in Iraq. He was passed over for a promotion and may have faced financial trouble at home.
Bales has not been charged, but the military has made a determination of probable cause. His childhood friends, Michelle Caddell and Michael Blevins, tell Dr. Drew the “killer” described in news accounts is not the Robert Bales they know and love.
