Driven by current events, "Dr. Drew" on HLN focuses on the human - and human behavior - at the center of the story.

Rutgers roommate trial: Hate crime?

  • Dr. Drew asks 'Are your kids vulnerable to this level of deadly misery?'

Prosecutors say Dharun Ravi and another student placed a webcam in Tyler Clementi's Rutgers University dorm room without his knowledge to allegedly spy on his encounter with another man.

Just days after the incident in 2010, Clementi committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge, which connects New Jersey and Manhattan.

Ravi, 20, now faces a 15-count indictment in Clementi's death that includes hate crime charges, charges of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and tampering with physical evidence.

Dr. Drew says "Internet-generation kids don't seem to get the severity of streaming and posting their lives and the lives of others.  The effects are far reaching and permanent.”

Are your kids vulnerable to this level of deadly misery? Is Clementi's death a hate crime or simply a case of two young students who were victims of miscommunication brought on by social media?

Dr. Drew and his guests discuss these issues in-depth.
