Being the first African-American female soloist at the American Ballet Theatre in 20 years definitely makes Misty Copeland a Morning Express with Robin Meade ‘Breakthrough Woman.’ But it’s more than just the color of her skin that makes her an inspiration. Misty is a mentor to girls eager to follow in her footsteps, on the stage and in life. She says, “The challenges of being one of the few black women in this field, gave me this determination not to give up.”
Misty points out that for many the idea of a “classical ballerina” is a “...white woman. Petite. Without curves. So it’s very different from my build and my background.” She’s glad she’s had the opportunity to reshape that perception, “I think I fit a new mold that I’m making for myself of what a ballerina should look like.”
That’s a sentiment you can hear from the girls Misty mentors as well. Imani DeJesus says Misty has taught her, “…even if we’re different, if we’re unique, we can be just as equal as anyone else.”
If you are a 'Breakthrough Woman' or know someone who is, let us know. We may feature her on HLN's Morning Express with Robin Meade.
