Kelly Roberts wasn’t just running through the motions this past weekend at the New York City half-marathon, she was photographing them, too. Roberts started taking pictures with random “hotguysofthenychalf” and posting them to her Instagram account. HLN spoke with Roberts, and asked her about her memorable half-marathon.
HLN: First off, how did your half-marathon go? Was this your first half-marathon, or have you done races before?
Kelly Roberts: This was probably the funnest half-marathon I have ever run. The course was perfect and the men were lovely. The NY Half was my fifth half-marathon. I have also ran one full-marathon and one 10K. It was actually my second best time for a half-marathon. Sprinting toward handsome men was a wonderful motivator!
HLN: Did anybody notice you were taking photographs of them during the race?
Roberts: A few of them had to have noticed because I definitely wasn't sly about it, especially toward the end of the race. But no one seemed to notice or say anything to me during the race.
HLN: How did you pick each person specifically?
Roberts: I would try to zero in on a guy with a banging body or a guy running with lots of girls. I would then sprint past them, check them out from the side and then position myself close enough to get the picture.
HLN: Did taking these photos help you to run faster?
Roberts: DEFINITELY. Although I would then slow down trying to find a filter and type a caption.
HLN: Do you think you have started a new trend for marathoners?
Roberts: Yes, unfortunately! Runners take their races really seriously (never cross a runner trying to get a personal record). So I apologize in advance for all the people attempting to take selfies with other runners.
HLN: What has been the response to your story?
Roberts: INSANE! I did not expect the story to blow up. But I am happy I made so many people laugh. And hopefully I inspired some people to try to train for a half-marathon. I NEVER thought I would be a runner before a year and a half ago. And whether you run a 5K or a full marathon, it’s an amazing rush.
HLN: How did you manage to keep your makeup looking flawless throughout this race?
Roberts: I'm actually only wearing tinted sunscreen and waterproof mascara. Thanks Covergirl! It also was 30 degrees out so I didn't sweat too much. Try me again in July, I look like a melting crayon.
HLN: Did any of the men catch you taking pictures and say anything to you?
Roberts: I had Beyoncé playing in my headphones, so communicating with others is often hard as the race gets going.
HLN: What is the next race you are training for?
Roberts: The only races I am signed up for right now are the Brooklyn-Half, Disneyland-Half [marathons] and I am in the lottery for the New York Marathon. But I am a race junkie so I try to get in a race a month. So stay tuned!
HLN: Would you do this again for another race?
Roberts: I definitely want to. But we will see if I can come up with a couple spins on it.
