Opening statements begin Tuesday in the Grim Sleeper serial killer case, thirty years after the first victim was discovered in a South Los Angeles alley.
Lonnie Franklin Jr., 63, is accused of slaying one girl and nine women and dumping their bodies around South Los Angeles.
Franklin, a former garbage collector, earned the nickname “the Grim Sleeper” because his alleged crimes occurred in spurts over a span of three decades.
When police arrested Franklin in July of 2010, they seized 180 photographs of unknown women from his home. Most of the women in the photos have been identified, but about 30 of the women remain unknown.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Franklin has pleaded not guilty
